CAMERON, La. (AP) - Cameron Parish Sheriff Ron Johnson says a deputy arrested on drug charges has been fired.

State police say 28-year-old Derek Nothnagel, of Lake Charles, was stopped on Interstate 10 in Sulphur Tuesday night for following too closely and improper lane use.

Sgt. James Anderson says Nothnagel, who was off duty, refused to allow troopers to search his truck. He says a police dog indicated the truck held drugs, and a search turned up 18 pounds of marijuana in a duffel bag.

Nothnagel was booked with marijuana possession with intent to distribute and use and sale of drug paraphernalia. Nothnagel’s bond was set at $27,300. He remains in the Calcasieu Parish jail.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for Nothnagel.
