TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A man who is a suspect in the shooting of an Oklahoma police officer has been charged with crimes he allegedly committed while trying to escape from law enforcement officers in Kansas.

Alejandro Arturo Garcia-Garcia, 22, was charged Thursday with attempted capital murder, kidnapping, burglary and interference with law enforcement, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a news release. The charges relate only to alleged crimes in Kansas said Schmidt, who is prosecuting the case at the request of Montgomery County authorities.

Garcia-Garcia, also known as Alex Garcia or Alejandro Garcia, was arrested May 29 when law enforcement officers found him hiding in a closet of a home near Liberty, Kansas.

Prosecutors allege Garcia-Garcia, another man and a woman fled when an officer tried to stop their vehicle in Rogers County, Oklahoma. During the chase, someone inside the car shot at an Oologah police cruiser, hitting an officer in the head, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The two other suspects were arrested after their car was found in Coffeyville, but Garcia-Garcia fled after allegedly shooting the driver of a pickup truck and driving away in the truck, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Grimes followed the truck, which eventually pulled into a driveway. The Sheriff’s Office said Garcia got out of the truck and shot at Grimes before fleeing toward the house. After a search and standoff that lasted all night, officers entered the home and found Garcia-Garcia in the closet. He was then arrested.

The two other suspects are awaiting extradition to Oklahoma. Garcia-Garcia is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $2 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court June 25.

The Oologah officer has been released from hospital and is recovering, according to Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The condition of the man shot near Coffeyville was not immediately available.
