MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a police officer has shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him after biting a pedestrian on an upstate New York street.

Police in the city of Middletown say they received a report Wednesday that an aggressive dog had bitten a person. When the officer arrived, the pit bull was being held on a leash.

The officer asked the person holding the leash to close the leash in a patrol car door pending the arrival of the city’s animal control officer. Officials say the dog pulled its leash from the door and attacked the police officer.

Police say the officer was forced to shoot the dog.

It was the second fatal shooting of a pit bull by a Middletown police officer within the past week.
