MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A charitable trust established by a prominent West Virginia University benefactor has donated an additional $3 million to the school.

The university announced the gift from the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust on Wednesday. The funds establish an endowment that WVU’s president can tap for a wide range of initiatives to advance the university, including scholarships, visits by guest speakers, travel to conferences and awards for faculty achievement.

McQuain died in 2002 at age 93. She served 11 years on the WVU Foundation board of directors. She has donated to numerous programs at the university and endowed six chairs.

The most recent gift was made in conjunction with the WVU Foundation’s $1 billion fund-raising campaign, which runs through 2017.
