COTTONWOOD, Ariz. (AP) - The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of a deputy who fatally shot a suspect after the two got into an altercation in Cottonwood.

Authorities said Wednesday that 26-year-old Deputy Steven Gorman remains on routine administrative leave.

Sheriff’s spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn says Gorman was one of two deputies who conducted a traffic stop May 22 of a vehicle with six people, including 18-year-old Ebin Proctor.

Authorities say Proctor fled on foot and Gorman followed.

D’Evelyn says the two got into a struggle and Gorman tried using a Taser and pepper spray.

Authorities say Proctor tried to get Gorman’s firearm.

That is when Gorman says he shot Proctor, who died at the scene.

Gorman suffered injuries from the altercation.

The state Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting.
