SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A $1.6 million grant makes Salt Lake County one of 10 communities nationwide to become part of a federal effort to reduce homelessness.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/1JwMdIk) the funds will support 50 AmeriCorps members working through various nonprofit groups to help reduce homelessness and improve economic opportunities over the next two years.

Members will work to bring housing, medical care and job placement services to chronically homeless individuals in the county.

The Corporation for National and Community Service administers AmeriCorps. CEO Wendy Spencer says recruitment for those member positions starts in the fall.
