SAN DIEGO (AP) - Two former employees of a Jewish community center in San Diego pleaded guilty to embezzling a total of more than $500,000 in separate schemes.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1GbbUNq ) that 59-year-old Nancy Johnson, the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center’s chief financial officer, and 62-year-old Tamara Azizov, the center’s accounts payable clerk, both pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return.

Both women worked alongside each other for several years, but did not know the other was embezzling money from the nonprofit.

Prosecutors say while Johnson was skimming hundreds of thousands of dollars, she told her employers the center needed to cut expenses.

Johnson is set to be sentenced Aug. 28, Azizov on Sept. 11.
