NEW YORK (AP) - Etan Patz’s (AY’-tahn PAYTS’) father is endorsing the political campaign of the prosecutor who spearheaded the case against the man accused of killing 6-year-old Etan in 1979.

Stan Patz issued a statement Friday, days after Joan Illuzzi (ill-EWE’-zee) became the Republican nominee for Staten Island district attorney.

As a Manhattan assistant district attorney, she was the lead prosecutor in the murder trial surrounding Etan’s disappearance. It ended in a jury deadlock last month, after 18 days of deliberations.

Democratic opponent Michael McMahon, a former congressman, told The New York Times earlier this week he felt Illuzzi’s recent prosecutions hadn’t been successful. He cited the Patz case.

Stan Patz says “that is not how the Patz family feels.”

McMahon didn’t immediately respond to a request Friday evening for comment.
