FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A former New York Police Department officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking part in a $200,000 Florida cocaine deal.

A federal judge in Fort Lauderdale imposed the sentence Friday on 28-year-old Phillip LeRoy, who was twice named “Cop of the Year” in his Queens precinct. LeRoy pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking conspiracy charge in March and resigned from the police department.

LeRoy admitted providing security and carrying his off-duty gun during a drug deal that involved bringing about 22 pounds of cocaine from Florida to New York. The deal turned out to be a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation.

Court records show LeRoy is cooperating with investigators and could have his sentence reduced.

Two other men have pleaded guilty in the case.
