MACON, Ga. (AP) - A Macon mother has admitted to abandoning her 1-year-old son at a Wal-Mart after being accused of shoplifting by store employees.

The Macon Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1RQpYQx) reports that 25-year-old Ashley L. Heichelbech pleaded guilty on Friday to shoplifting and criminal attempt to commit cruelty to children in Bibb County Superior Court.

Authorities say Heichelbech shoplifted from a Wal-Mart in December. Upon being approached, she ran away, leaving her son behind in a shopping cart. She was arrested the following day.

Heichelbech told Judge Howard Simms she had been using methamphetamine at the time.

Heichelbech was sentenced to five years on probation and 180 days in a detention center. She can no longer have unsupervised contact with children.
