AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A 55-year-old Gardiner man who used his metal crutches to beat a panhandler he thought was scamming the public has been sentenced to 23 days in jail.

Cletus Jernigan Jr. pleaded guilty to assault this week and was also placed on administrative release for a year and ordered to pay $280 restitution for the victim’s medical bills.

The Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/1ARx9DD ) reports that Jernigan has already served the 23 days since his arrest.

Police say Jernigan attacked 29-year-old Daniel DeGreenia on April 5, sending him to the hospital with a hand injury. DeGreenia was holding a sign asking people for money.

Jernigan told police he thought DeGreenia was scamming the public.

DeGreenia has suffered from mental and physical ailments since being hit by a van in 2000.
