SEATTLE (AP) - A King County man who, along with his wife, pleaded guilty in a real estate scam has been sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to repay the $10 million he took from the bank.

The Seattle U.S. Attorney’s Office says Aleksandr Kravchenko pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and filing a false tax return. His wife was sentenced to five months after pleading guilty to a tax charge. He was sentenced Friday.

Officials say the Kravchenkos were involved in an elaborate bank fraud scheme in which they would locate property that was for sale and then recruit unqualified buyers. They submitted false loan applications to the Westsound Bank, causing it to make bad loans.

Kravchenko was indicted in 2009 and fled to Moldova. They were arrested and returned to the U.S. on an extradition warrant.
