MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a Mesa man has been arrested for alleged child abuse in the death of his young stepdaughter.

Mesa police say 27-year-old Andrew Isaacs was being booked into jail late Friday afternoon.

Police say officers responded to a report of a child not breathing about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

They say a 1 ½-year-old girl was found unresponsive in the apartment and taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the girl’s body showed obvious signs of trauma.

They say the child and her 4-year-old brother were in the care of Isaacs while their mother was away Thursday night.

Police say Isaacs was interviewed and admitted to “rough housing” with his stepdaughter.

They say the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine how the child died.
