NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A 31-year-old New Haven man who police say choked a woman and poured cleaning solution in her eyes has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

The New Haven Register reports (https://bit.ly/1ARGvPy ) 31-year-old Michael Cooper was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges including home invasion, strangulation and robbery.

The woman told police she was attacked after letting Cooper into her West Haven home to use the phone on April 16, 2014.

Prosecutors say the victim was choked into unconsciousness and believes she may have been sexually assaulted.

She says the chemical has left her with problems with her vision and sense of taste and smell.

Before being sentenced, Cooper told the judge he was grateful the woman did not die and told the courtroom to “say no to drugs.”
