BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - A Bay City park has been renamed in honor of a 31-year-old Green Beret who was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

The Bay City Times reports (https://bit.ly/1T0yfD0 ) the Bay City Commission voted to rename Marquette Pocket Park the Michael A. Cathcart Memorial Park. A dedication ceremony is July 3.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart died of wounds received from small arms fire in Kunduz Province on Nov. 14. Cathcart was a Bay City Central High School graduate who grew up about five blocks from the park site. He enlisted in the Army in 2001 and also served in combat in Iraq.

As part of park updates, the city plans to install a plaque in Cathcart’s honor as well as a flagpole and a light to shine on the flag.

This story has been corrected to show that the dedication ceremony is July 3, not Friday.
