PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A canal in Port Huron that’s used by boats and kayaks is closed due to silt from recent winds and storms.

City Manager James Freed tells the Times Herald of Port Huron (https://bwne.ws/1KIDscP ) that the state only allows the city to dredge at certain times of the year, not from June to August.

Freed says he’s asking the state to allow Port Huron to dredge the Black River Canal immediately. He said a contractor is ready to start the work.

Freed says “we need to keep it open.” The city says it expects to hear back about its request soon.
