CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed the director of the Las Vegas chapter of Teach for America to the Nevada State Board of Education.

The governor announced Friday that he was naming Victor Wakefield to the District 1 post effective immediately. The seat was formerly held by Alexis Gonzales-Black, who resigned this spring after moving to California.

Sandoval said the board will play a major role in implementing education initiatives recently approved by the Legislature, and pointed to Wakefield’s experience as a teacher.

Wakefield taught language arts at a charter school in Gary, Indiana before joining Teach for America’s recruiting efforts.

The organization places recent college graduates in two-year teaching assignments in low-income areas. It can apply for state funding through the new Great Teaching and Leading grant program.
