ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The murder trial of a 19-year-old man charged with killing his father inside their suburban Rochester home has been scheduled to begin September.

A Monroe County Court judge on Thursday set Sept. 14 as the start of Charles Tan’s trial on second-degree murder charges.

Authorities say the teen used a shotgun to shoot his 49-year-old father, Liang “Jim” Tan, multiple times at the family’s Pittsford home in February. The younger man was enrolled at Cornell University in Ithaca at the time of the shooting.

Tan was in court Thursday as his attorney made motions to review the validity of a statement he made to authorities after officers arrived at his family’s home on Feb. 9 and found his father dead.

The judge scheduled a hearing on the motions for June 17.
