SHANDAKEN, N.Y. (AP) - Stewards will be stationed on the Catskill Mountains’ highest peak this summer to help weekend climbers.

State environmental officials, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and the Catskill 3500 Club on Thursday announced a pilot summit steward program focusing on Slide Mountain.

Stewards will spend summer weekends on Slide Mountain’s summit through Columbus Day weekend. They will greet, educate and assist climbers. They also will help state forest rangers respond to emergencies.

Slide Mountain is in the Town of Shandaken, about 100 miles north of New York City. Its summit is 4,180 feet.

The stewards will be hired and managed by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and supported by the Catskill 3500 Club.
