BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police say University of Maryland, Baltimore, police officer shot a man once in one of his legs after receiving calls he was wielding a knife.

Baltimore Police spokesman Sgt. Jarron Jackson says the injury is believed to be non-life-threatening. The man is at a hospital.

Baltimore Police weren’t involved in Friday’s shooting, but are investigating.

University police were searching for a man shortly after 1 p.m. because of a call reporting an armed person. When they saw him, Jackson says he was “openly wielding a knife,” then reached into his waistband. Jackson says officers were concerned about the knife and that the man might be reaching for a gun, and fired.

Jackson says police have the knife. Asked if a gun was recovered, he said officers were investigating.
