VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia lawmaker’s $5 million defamation lawsuit against his 2013 Republican primary opponent has been settled out of court.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1SZ0sKd ) that an order dismissing Del. Scott Taylor’s lawsuit was filed last week. Terms of the settlement are confidential.

The defendants were Taylor’s opponent, Gary C. Byler, and several supporters of the challenger’s campaign. The March 2014 lawsuit claimed the Virginia Beach delegate’s reputation was damaged when opponents spread false information, including allegations of drug use and involvement with a prostitute.

The defendants denied the claims in Byler’s lawsuit. Two countersuits against Taylor were dismissed as part of the settlement.
