BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Several World War II veterans from western New York are finally getting the military service medals they earned.

On the eve of the 71st anniversary of D-Day, five veterans and the relatives of four others will receive the medals on Friday at a ceremony at the Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park.

Congressman Brian Higgins says each of the veterans or relatives contacted his office for help in receiving the honors they earned but were never given.

Among the more than 50 medals to be given out are one Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts.
