FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas’ new drug director has resigned from the Sebastian County Quorum Court.

Denny Altes of Fort Smith says in a letter to County Judge David Hudson that his job as drug director will require more time than he anticipated. The letter is dated May 26 and says his resignation is effective June 1.

Hudson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1HSNEfW ) that he received the letter on Wednesday.

Altes is a former state representative and state senator who was elected to the Quorum Court without opposition in November and took office Jan. 1.

He was named state drug director last month by Gov. Asa Hutchinson and will coordinate drug and alcohol prevention and treatment initiatives. Hutchinson will appoint Altes’ successor to the Quorum Court.
