MONROE, La. (AP) - A three-year-old child has received stitches after he was attacked by a peacock at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo in Monroe.

The child’s mother tells The News-Star (https://tnsne.ws/1Gg75mb ) that her son was not interacting with the bird when the attack happened on Friday.

The mother says her son bent down to look at some flowers, when the peacock leapt on him from behind. The boy received 14 stitches around one of his ears.

Monroe Chief Operations Officer Jimmie Bryant says the attack was a result of mating season, and the bird could have thought the child was in a mating position.

The mother called the incident a freak accident and says she doesn’t blame the zoo.

Officials said they are taking steps to prevent future such incidents.
