PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Dozens of people have sent letters seeking leniency for former House Speaker Gordon Fox at his sentencing next week on corruption charges.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1dlky0F) more than 50 letters of support from fellow legislators, lobbyists, friends and family have been filed in federal court. Fox is to be sentenced next week by U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi on bribery, wire fraud and tax charges.

About 50 letters, many using identical language, also have urged a harsh sentence.

Among those supporting Fox are state Rep. Edith Ajello and former lawmakers Maria Cimini, Peter Martin and Frank Ferri.

Fox pleaded guilty to accepting a $52,500 bribe from bar owners seeking a liquor license, and to spending $108,000 in campaign contributions on personal expenses. Prosecutors are recommending three years in prison under the plea agreement.
