ARLINTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - A 36-year-old man from suburban Chicago has been acquitted of murder in the punching death of another man last summer.

A jury deliberated for about four hours before acquitting Michael Platt of Palatine Friday night in the death of 26-year-old Michael Flannigan.

Platt was charged with first-degree murder after punching Flannigan in the head outside a bar last July.

Platt declined comment after the decision.

Flannigan’s mother, Debra Flannigan, called the decision unfair.

Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Piper portrayed Platt as a bully who bragged about punching Flannigan.

But defense attorney Sam Amirante said the event was a tragedy Platt would undo if he could.

Witnesses said Flannigan was trying to ease tensions in a dispute between two groups of people when he was punched in the temple.
