READING, Pa. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to life in prison in the ambush-style slaying of his on-again, off-again girlfriend in the parking lot of her central Pennsylvania apartment building.

Fifty-eight-year-old Randall Shreiner of West Lampeter Township pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree murder in Lancaster County the Feb. 18 slaying of 44-year-old Monica Miller.

Authorities said he hid in the bushes outside the Ephrata complex before opening fire on the victim as she was leaving for work. They said he was upset that she had ended the relationship.

Judge Margaret Miller called his actions “the textbook definition of premeditation.” She said “You did not treat her as a person, you treated her as property.”

Shreiner told relatives of the victim that he was “truly sorry,” but many turned away as he spoke.
