EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A man has been rescued in the water near Everett after being stranded on a sailboat for eight days.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports (https://is.gd/T153KJ ) the boat had been stuck in the mud between Jetty Island and the Tulalip Indian Reservation.

Snohomish County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Shari Ireton says the situation could have ended badly because no one knew he was out there in need of help, until a citizen went out to investigate why his sailboat wasn’t moving.

The 60-year-old man explained he had flown in from Alaska to Seattle in early May and bought the sailboat.

The new owner ran out of fuel and then tried to use the sails, but he was not an experienced seaman. The keel became stuck in the mud and the boat wouldn’t budge, even at high tide.

Ireton says when he was rescued, the man was disoriented, hungry and dehydrated.
