MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Mason City firefighter overcome by heat while battling a house fire was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1KgMPCy ) that the firefighter was taken to the hospital by ambulance while battling the blaze on Friday.

The firefighter was treated and released later Friday afternoon. Officials would not release his name.

Smoke damaged the entire home. Mason City Fire Lt. Dave Nelson says the fire was concentrated in a first-floor bedroom, especially on and near the mattress.

The home’s occupants were not home when the fire broke out. They discovered the fire when they arrived at the house and called the fire department.

The fire remains under investigation.
