OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Police in Northern California say an officer killed a man in Oakland after a brief standoff.

Oakland Police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson says firefighters on Saturday called police after seeing a handgun inside a car where a man was found unconscious or asleep.

Watson tells the Oakland Tribune (https://bayareane.ws/1FFzBsI ) the man’s car was on the off ramp of a freeway and that eventually he woke up he refused to surrender. One officer fired and wounded the man. Watson did not provide further details on what led the officer to shoot him.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police initially said the man and the car were associated with crimes committed in another city Friday night but had not confirmed that information.
