HAVELOCK, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say the former husband of a 22-year-old woman who was missing for more than a month has been charged with murder after her body was found in an abandoned home in New Bern.

District Attorney Scott Thomas told media outlets that investigators confirmed the remains found Friday were Summer Swindell and charged 27-year-old Michael Ballance II with an open count of murder later in the day.

Authorities say an autopsy has been ordered to determine exactly how Swindell died.

Investigators say Balance told police he last saw his former wife when she got in an SUV with a man in unusual circumstances on April 28. But Thomas says police couldn’t confirm that story.

It wasn’t known if Balance had a lawyer.
