DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a Detroit police officer has been shot in the foot and a teen shot in the chin.

Police Chief James Craig told reporters that the officer responded to calls of shots fired in an eastside neighborhood Saturday afternoon and collided with a car. The officer got out of his vehicle and someone shot at him.

Craig says the officer returned fire and while doing so may have shot himself in the foot. Either way, the chief says, the officer faced a threat and “responded by using deadly force.”

The officer and 18-year-old driver were taken to a hospital and both are expected to be OK.
