PITTSBORO, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol says it is investigating a traffic accident that killed two people near Pittsboro.

The patrol’s statement said a Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south on U.S. 15 on Monday when it went into the median and overturned, rolling into the northbound lanes.

According to the patrol, an oncoming car swerved to avoid a head-on collision, but the Tahoe continued rolling and landed on top of another car.

Authorities identified the driver of the Tahoe as 18-year-old Yolanda Gonzalez-Saavedra of Chapel Hill, who was a student at Northwood High School. The driver of the second car was identified as 44-year-old John Wade Collins of Pinehurst.

Lt. Jeff Gordon said the driver of the first car was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. He said the wreck is under investigation.
