DAVENPORT, Fla. (AP) - The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says a 4-year-old Clermont boy was killed and his 2-year-old sister seriously injured after a box truck slammed into the back of their father’s car on U.S. 27 in Davenport.

The Ledger of Lakeland (https://bit.ly/1FK4wUD ) reports Nicholas Jayden Carroll died at the scene while being treated in an ambulance Saturday morning. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Donna Wood said MacKenzie Carroll was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital and listed in serious condition.

Investigators say the box truck was moving at highway speed and braked just short of the impact. The driver, 18-year-old Ednaldo Silva Marques, was taken to South Lake Hospital in Clermont where he was treated and released for a hand injury he sustained while trying to break a window of the Toyota to assist the family.

This story has been corrected to show the 2-year-old girl was flown to the hospital, not the police spokeswoman.
