LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - An officer-involved shooting along Interstate 49 in Crawford County is under investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

Troopers say that at about 6:20 a.m. Monday, a state trooper patrolling I-49 encountered a person walking along the southbound shoulder. As the trooper approached, the unidentified man refused to comply with the trooper’s orders and became combative. The pedestrian fled into the traffic lanes and ran into a wooded embankment above the roadway.

As the trooper moved closer, the man raised his hand holding a large rock in a threatening manner. The trooper then fired his weapon, wounding the man. He was transported to a Fort Smith hospital where he is reported in stable condition.

The trooper is on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. The trooper was not identified.
