HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say a man drowned at Beech Fork Lake while trying to help two relatives.

West Virginia State Police tell media outlets that the victim, his brother and six children were on a boat on the lake on Saturday. The brother jumped into the water to help his daughter, who was in distress. The victim then jumped into the water to help but he didn’t surface.

Wayne County emergency services deputy director Jim Cooper identified the victim as 43-year-old Ray Spears.

Divers searched the lake on Saturday and Sunday for Spears’ body.
