MUKWONAGO, Wis. (AP) - Authorities in Eau Claire County searched Monday for a man suspected of abducting a woman at a Wal-Mart in southeastern Wisconsin. She later escaped.

Police were searching a heavily wooded area in the Town of Seymour for the 24-year-old suspect, who ran away after a police chase out of Eau Claire at speeds over 100 mph, the Leader-Telegram reported. Sheriff’s officials said the man is armed with a rifle or shotgun.

According to the Mukwonago Police Department, the 21-year-old victim is an employee at the Mukwonago Wal-Mart and knows the suspect. Her co-workers called police about 5 a.m. when she failed to return from a break.

Store surveillance video showed the suspect’s car approaching the woman and the driver forcing her inside. About seven hours later, the vehicle was spotted at an Eau Claire convenience store, where the woman was able to escape.

The woman was able to tell officers who abducted her, Mukwonago police said.

The suspect fled on foot after crashing his vehicle during the police chase. Aircraft, police dogs and SWAT units were being used in the search.

The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Office tweeted to area residents that the search “might be long term,” so they should “have alternate plans for tonight.”
