WILLIAMSBURG, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio firefighter has died after collapsing at a house fire last month.

Authorities say Lt. David Knapke died Friday. The Williamsburg Township firefighter had to be resuscitated at the scene of a house fire in Mt. Orab after he collapsed on May 30. He was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.

Officials say the 55-year-old wasn’t hurt by the fire, but suffered a sudden cardiac event just after he and other firefighters finished extinguishing the fire.

Authorities say Knapke’s father was also a firefighter. Williamsburg Township Emergency Services Capt. Daniel Bainum says Knapke had been around the department “since the day he was born.”

Fire officials are asking for donations to support Knapke’s family.
