COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A 13-year-old girl is dead and her 15-year-old sister is in a hospital after they were shot in central Ohio while sitting in a kitchen.

Police say it happened Saturday night in Columbus when shots rang out from an open lot next door to the home. The girls were taken to a hospital where the younger sister died at about 11:45 p.m. The older sister is expected to recover.

Sgt. Jeffrey Strayer tells the Columbus Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1Ix5B9j ) that police are trying to determine a motive for the “sneak attack.” He says it was “meaningful, purposeful and vicious.”

Strayer says police aren’t releasing the victims’ names to protect the wounded girl and her family.

No arrests have been made.
