SPRING LAKE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Spring Lake have accused a Fort Bragg soldier of submerging his 17-month-old daughter in hot water.

Police told local media outlets that 23-year-old Nicholas Young is charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and maiming without malice. Young is assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division.

According to police, Young said he was home alone with the child on May 29 when he accidentally spilled a cup of hot water on her while removing the cup from the microwave. After Womack Army Medical Center staff examined the child, they determined the injuries were neither accidental nor consistent with Young’s story

Investigators say the child has third-degree burns on the middle and lower parts of her body. She was transferred to the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.
