BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police and the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department are on heightened alert for two escaped murderers from a maximum security prison near Plattsburgh, New York, although authorities say the two have no known ties to the state.

Authorities tell the Burlington Free Press (https://bfpne.ws/1eXIqbJ) they began closer monitoring of traffic along the state border after an alert from New York State Police on Saturday.

State Police Capt. J.P. Sinclair said four members of a tactical support unit in the Franklin County area were placed on alert.

New York State Police have been monitoring the Lake Champlain ferry that runs between Cumberland Head, New York, and Grand Isle.

The inmates cut through steel walls and pipes over the weekend at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora in the Adirondacks.
