CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Charlotte say a woman faces a variety of drug and traffic charges after a crash that killed another motorist.

A statement from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police says a car driven by 22-year-old Jessica Sowell of Clover, South Carolina, crossed the center line on Sunday and struck a sport-utility vehicle being driven by 53-year-old Casey Townsend.

Police says Townsend’s SUV went off the road and rolled over in a ditch. Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene.

Among the charges Sowell faces are misdemeanor death by vehicle, texting while driving, trafficking heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sowell is in the Mecklenburg County jail under a bond in excess of $300,000. Jail records don’t indicate whether she has an attorney.
