PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island has received nearly $5 million to continue research on perinatal biology.

The hospital received a grant from the National Institutes of Health, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The hospital says its Center of Biomedical Research Excellence for Perinatal Biology team of doctors will continue its research. The studies include fetal and newborn development, placental biology and reproductive diseases, including preterm birth and preeclampsia.

The hospital says the grant will support administrative activities of the center and provide it with state-of-the-art equipment.

Women & Infants research scientist Surendra Sharma says work supported by the center has identified new insights into the pregnancy disorder preeclampsia.
