MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - Residents of Mandan are voting on whether to increase taxes to fund a sports complex.

Tuesday’s election is on a proposed three-fourths percent sales tax to fund the $22 million Park District project that would include a two-rink hockey arena, gymnastics facilities, and a football and track field. The existing football and track field would be converted into ball fields.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Park District officials have narrowed the list of potential sites to two - west of the former Mandan Hospital or in front of the Tesoro oil refinery.

Supporters say the project would improve quality of life and bring more money to the city. Opponents say a sales tax increase would hurt Mandan businesses by deterring people from shopping in the city.
