BREVARD, N.C. (AP) - The State Bureau of Investigation says a Transylvania County man was shot and killed as officers were trying to serve warrants for operation of a liquor still.

The SBI’s Teresa West said in a statement Tuesday that two sheriff’s deputies, an Alcohol Law Enforcement officer and a Homeland Security agent were at the home in Penrose when the shooting occurred.

West says 58-year-old Lester Randolph Brown died after he was shot Monday evening.

She said officers thought Brown had an illegal still on his back porch. She says Brown ran upstairs and got a rifle and was shot when he refused to put it down.

Two officers suffered minor injuries.

West says all four officers fired their weapons. Their names have not been released.
