FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) - Protesters say they didn’t know a man charged with shooting and wounding two officers last week outside the Ferguson Police Department.

St. Louis County Prosecutor Robert McCulloch said Sunday that 20-year-old Jeffrey Williams had attended a protest earlier in the evening before two St. Louis area officers were shot early Thursday.

Twenty-six-year-old Brittany Ferrell said she’d just left a meeting with other protest leaders Sunday when word of the arrest circulated. The protest leader with the group Millennial Activists United said no one in the group knew Williams. A St. Louis NAACP leader also hadn’t heard of Williams.

Ferrell says she suspects McCulloch tried to cast Williams as a protester to reflect negatively on the movement. McCulloch led a grand jury that declined to indict a white police officer in the Aug. 9 shooting of Michael Brown.
