ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have found the body of retired police officer who went missing earlier this year.

Elizabeth police tell NJ.com (https://bit.ly/1BNjiwk) that 79-year-old Edward Purcell was found around 1 a.m. Saturday in the backyard of a city home. Officers had gone to the area after receiving reports about a suspicious person.

Authorities say foul play isn’t suspected in Purcell’s death, but they haven’t said how he may have ended up at the home.

Authorities say the body was hidden by a garage behind the home. It was in the advanced stages of decomposition and had “clearly been in place for some time” Geddes said.

Purcell was reported missing in late January. Authorities have said he suffered from dementia and seizures.

Purcell served with the East Orange Police department for 27 years.
