RICHMOND, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin has kicked off Vermont’s 2015 maple season by tapping a tree at a Richmond farm.

Shumlin tapped the ceremonial first tree Tuesday at Slopeside Syrup, located on the grounds of the Cochran’s Ski Area.

The not-for-profit ski center was founded in 1961 by Mickey and Ginny Cochran. The sugaring operation was established in 2011 by four Cochran grandchildren.

One of the grandchildren, Roger Brown, was named 2014 “Sugar Maker of the Year” by the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association.
