LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed a murder charge against an 18-year-old man who allegedly fatally stabbed a 15-year-old Long Beach boy to steal his backpack.

The district attorney’s office says Giovanny Montelongo appeared in court Monday afternoon in Long Beach but arraignment was postponed to next month.

Montelongo is also charged with second-degree robbery and attempted second-degree robbery, with special allegations of murder during the commission of a robbery and that the crimes were committed in association with a criminal street gang.

Cabrillo High School freshman Keshawn Brooks was stabbed March 12 as he walked home from school. Montelongo was arrested that evening at a Long Beach residence.

Prosecutors allege Montelongo also attempted to rob another person.

A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made later.
