CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) - A woman who was choked by a former Chicopee police officer during a violent struggle in February 2013 has sued for $1 million.

The suit filed in federal court in Springfield by Maylene Maldonado alleges civil rights violations and improper training of officers.

The city released video in which several officers try to control Maldonado, who had been drinking and taking drugs. The video shows one officer, Sgt. Daniel Major, putting a hand around her throat. Major is named in the lawsuit. A message could not be left at the office of his lawyer.

The city says Major no longer works for the department.

Mayor Richard Kos’ office said: “The city takes these allegations very seriously and the Chicopee Law Department will file a timely answer to this lawsuit once served.”
